Jay has practiced law in Kirksville since 1984, with extensive courtroom and trial experience in venues spanning northeast Missouri. Jay grew up in Monroe City in a large family with eight brothers and sisters. A 1980 Truman State University alum with a degree in Mass Communications, Jay obtained his law degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1984. Jay is married to Vicki Benson, the Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Home Team  & Vicki Benson Properties in Kirksville. Jay and Vicki have two children. Their son, Quinn, a 2017 graduate of University of Missouri – Columbia, and a graduate 2020 of University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. He was sworn in as a Missouri licensed attorney in September 2020. Quinn just completed his position as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, with The Honorable Doug Thomson; he joined The Benson Law Firm in September 2022. Their daughter, Lara,  is a 2018 graduate of University of Missouri – Columbia, and is a May 2022 graduate of University of Missouri School of Law. Lara took her Oath of Admission as a Missouri lawyer in October 2022.

Community/Professional Involvement
Jay is a committed member of the Kirksville community. He presently serves on the Board of Directors of Preferred Family Healthcare, Inc., a mental healthcare provider and drug and alcohol treatment facility, and a former member of the Board of Directors for the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Kirksville. Jay is co-founder of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Education Foundation, and serves on its Board of Directors. He is an avid pilot, and was a charter member of Kirksville Airport Association, Inc.

Jay is a long-time, active participant in the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys (MATA). He has served on MATA’s Board of Governors since 1997 and was elected to MATA’s Executive Committee in 2009. Jay served as President of MATA from June 2016 through June 2017. He served as editor of The Missouri Trial Attorney, MATA’s quarterly publication, from 2003 to 2009.

Jay is an enthusiastic and supportive fan of the athletic programs of the University of Missouri Tigers, the Truman State University Bulldogs and the Kirksville High School Tigers. He is also an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.
