Firm Summary

When Dan Romano was growing up, it was not his ambition and dream to go to law school and open his own firm. He did not follow a straight path. And he remembers well, driving around with his friends and being targeted simply for his age and taken advantage of by those in a position of authority. It was the unfair treatment he received from police officers that made him step back and say, “Hey: this isn’t right.” That underlying emotion lay dormant until after a slew of careers, Dan realized his true calling was to fight for those who did not have options, who had been in the same position as he had been—and much worse—so many years ago. Thus, he began his legal career as a law student in 1990 and has never looked back.

After graduating from Wayne State University Law School cum laude in 1993, Dan served as a prehearing attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals.  This experience led him to join a plaintiff’s personal injury law firm as a trial attorney, where he handled and tried a majority of their Auto Negligence cases. Dan went on to become a partner and oversaw the General Negligence and Police Misconduct Department, which he himself cultivated.

Over the course of eleven years, Dan’s experience with one of the most successful personal injury practices in Michigan proved an innate sensitivity to protect the people from abuses by government, corporate and insurance interests. It was with a renewed sense of seeking justice and a briefcase holding only 40 files, that in 2007, he founded Romano Law, P.L.L.C. with the intent to fight for the client and maintain an allegiance with justice and protecting the rights of the people.

Having settled or tried over a thousand cases in his career, including successfully arguing cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals, Dan considers tort law as both a professional responsibility and civic duty in order to ensure that the proper voice is heard. In 1999, he successfully exposed a decades-long practice by Detroit police officers of arresting and holding homicide witnesses indefinitely and without communication with loved ones or legal counsel. His client was awarded a multiple six-figure verdict and the elicited testimony from homicide detectives was used by the FBI and United States Justice Department in their case against the Detroit police. Dan and his client were featured nationally in, amongst others, the New York Times, the Boston Globe and the Detroit Free Press.

In addition to his professional responsibility, Dan has served as an Executive Board Member of the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association (now the Michigan Association for Justice) and currently sits as a case evaluator for Michigan’s three largest Circuit Courts.

Dan is admitted to the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan along with the Southern District of Indiana. He is licensed to argue cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and most recently, before the United States Supreme Court.

Dan and his wife Amy reside in metro Detroit with their family of rescue dogs. As avid protagonists of the animal rescue community, the Romanos are active participants in providing rehabilitation and sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals.
