He graduated from the Oklahoma Military Academy in 1967, received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Northeastern State College in 1969, and received his Juris Doctorate degree from Tulsa University College of Law in 1971.

Elder was admitted to practice law in Oklahoma in 1972, the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Oklahoma, in 1973, the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1975, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977.

He has also served as a past chairman of the Tulsa County Bar Association’s Domestic Relations Section, and was a contributing editor to the Oklahoma Trial Lawyer Journal.
