Born and raised in Abilene, Texas. Alan graduated from Abilene Cooper High School in 1978. Later on, he went to attend McMurry University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. Furthermore, he continued his education at Texas Southern University where Alan would earn his law degree in 1990.

​In 1991, Alan moved to Odessa, Texas and began practicing law where he has continued his solo practice. He has successfully tried criminal and civil cases in a number of courts in West Texas including Winkler County, Andrews County, Reeves County, Ector County, and Midland County. He also has years of experience in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas and is licensed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

​Alan married his wife Christi, a native Odessan, in 1996. The couple has two children, Sophie, who attends Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona and Seth, who attends Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
