Jeff Hughes was enrolled at the College of the Canyons for two years before attending the University of Oklahoma on a baseball scholarship in 1984. He graduated from California State University Northridge in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He then decided to pursue a professional career in baseball. Jeff played in the minor leagues with the San Francisco Giants and the Salt Lake City Trappers.

After his baseball career, Jeff returned to the University of Oklahoma School of Law, where he graduated with honors.
