Joel E. Salazar was born on October 24, 1955 in Waco, Texas.
He began his higher education in the University of Texas, El Paso, Texas where he completed his Bachelor’s of arts in Political Science in 1978. From there he continued to complete his Master’s in the University of Texas, El Paso, Texas and then on to his Juris Doctor in the Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School at Law, Houston, Texas which he completed in 1988.
From 1988-1989 he was a legal assistant for Simmons, Zwernemann, Hamilton, Fletcher & Rosales and has been in private practice since 1989. His areas of specialty include: criminal litigation, plaintiff’s personal injury litigation, Guardian Ad-Litem in minor settlements and general practice.
Joel Salazar has licensures in the Supreme Court of the United States of America, Supreme Court of Texas, United States District Court of the Southern District of Texas & the United Sates District Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is also a member of the State Bar of Texas since 1997, the Grievance Committee for Houston, Harris County, the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee for Houston, Harris County, the Standing Committee – Liaison with the Mexican Legal Profession, the Section Committee – Hispanic Issues Section & the Texas Young Lawyer Association – Minority Involvement Committee. Currently he is a member of the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas and Houston where he is President Elect for the 2002 – 2003 period.
During his years at Law School he received various honors and awards. In 1978 he received the “Men of Mines” award and was nominated as one of the top ten students for the UTEP as well as being Vice President for External affairs for the Student Association. In 1986 he became President of the Christian Legal Society for the TSU-TMSL while making the Dean’s List and being in the top 30% of his class, and was nominated in 1991 for the “Who’s Who Among Rising Young Americans”.
Joel E. Salazar has been involved with the community throughout his career by actively participating in numerous organizations. Currently he is a mentor for the Gregory-Lincoln Middle School “I Have a Dream” program and is a Class Facilitator for “Leadership Houston” class 2002-2003 as well as being a member of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
