He then worked for Southern Prisoners Defense Committee in Atlanta, Georgia, gathering evidence to help stop the execution of condemned inmates on death row throughout the South. As an intern at the federal public defender in Alaska, he focused his practice on the defense of those who crossed the Alaska–Canadian border with drugs or contraband.  He won his first jury trial, earning an acquittal in federal court for a young woman accused of carrying drugs from Canada across the US border.
